JOIN THE JOYFUL HANDS

The Love of Many Hands Stitched into the Warmth of a Quilt

Just the thought of a quilt gives us a warm homey feeling. Quilts made here at Joy Lutheran provide that comfort and warmth to many. Over two hundred quilts are given away in a single year: recently to hospice centers, veterans home, Shriners’ Children’s Hospital, domestic violence victims, hurricane relief in South Florida, refugees of war in the Ukraine, and to our own shut-ins.

The mighty little group that sews every Wednesday morning consists of 6-12 women. Church members and non-members join together in this effort. It takes a lot more than sewing. While two women sew, others sandwich and pin together the tops, batting and backing. Another group ties the knots that hold the quilt together. Then the quilts are pressed, and the binding pinned and stitched in place.

The colorful quilts come to our attention on the Sunday when they are draped over every pew, beautifully decorating our sanctuary. At that time, quilts are available for sale. The quilting group raises the funds to purchase supplies for the next year. The appealing printed fabrics are mostly donated and the sheets for the backing are purchased at Thrift Stores.

Can YOU help? “Joyful Hands” will welcome you in Swenson Hall any Wednesday morning at 9:00 AM. Donations of flat sheets (double, queen or king) are always helpful.
